I live right near Dean's and was googling why it closed and came upon your site. I have to say I have a completely different take on why it did not survive and disagree with many of the comments you wrote. Nobody shopped there because the selection was terrible and the freshness of their produce really bad. In an neighborhood full of young professionals, we want quality foods, organic produce and prepared foods that list the ingredients on the label. The energy in there was awful and I went in several times to find it unattended while the employees were smoking cigs in the alley behind the store.
I'm all about supporting local businesses but its gotta be worth supporting. Many items I wanted to buy had expiration dates 1 to 2 week past or expired the next day. Looks at other mid-sized cities like Portland, OR, Minneapolis or Milwaukee. They have great gourmet groceries like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's in prominent downtown locations. Why does it work? Because they have a great selection and fresh food. I'll pay a little more for food that is not rotten. Or even look at other hoods in Denver - Riverfront has Natural Grocers and it's always packed. Or even Tony's on Broadway or Marczyk's. They are all doing great and offer great food. Dean's just missed the mark for downtown Denver residents. Hopefully someone else will take it over and model their selection after other successful grocers in Denver.

Now if we could just get street signs for peds walking against traffic on one way streets. I wonder how many people have been hit stepping into the cross street to see the printed side of the sign facing opposite to way they are traveling. Try walking east on 13th or 18th avenues or west on 14th or 17th and you will see my point.

Pedestrians should be considered in all transportation improvements, especially signage.
